Scales for Justice

Working towards peace and reconciliation

Our services

Scales for Justice (S4J) is dedicated to Human Rights. The documentation of human rights situations, the active participation in the relevant meetings of international human rights mechanisms and a close collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) therefore remain an S4J priority task of our daily work.

Urgent appeals to the United Nations are among the most effective means in cases of urgent matters. After receiving information of Human Rights violations S4J will examine the case and study which human rights bodies must be engaged in the issue. Based on its experience within the UN-System S4J will draft a letter and bring it to the attention of the concerned human rights mechanisms, notably the UN Special Procedures and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Regular exchange with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and a relation of mutual trust are crucial for this task.

The typical results of urgent appeals are government communications by the UN (these communications remain strictly confidential until the next communication report of the Special Procedures to the Human Rights Council), press releases by the UN as well as the inclusion of the case into official reports.

Trainings

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" goes a famous saying. Following this idea Scales for Justice does not only consider it important to advocate for cases of urgent matters at the UN, but also to give trainings to groups and individuals interested in learning more about how to better advocate with the United Nations and present their cases directly to the concerned UN bodies. Trainings include modules about the general work and structure of the UN, international humanitarian law and Human Rights law, as well as an overview over the different human rights bodies of the United Nations and how to engage  with those bodies. Trainings can be held inside or outside Geneva and are offered in Arabic, English, French, Spanish or German. On request they can be scheduled to coincide with relevant meetings at the UN.  To learn more send an email to info@s4j.ch.

Presentations

One of the priorities of S4J remains raising awareness about specific human rights situations and urgent matters. S4J therefore offers presentations to education institutes like schools and universities but also to other interested groups and associations interested in learning more about such issues. Presentations can be held in Arabic, English, French, Spanish and German. They can be arranged on request by sending an email to info@s4j.ch.
